Role of the Women's Royal Naval Service between 1917-1944

Synopsis

This lesson will help students write to entertain, introducing them to the central importance of parody to British comedy before attempting to develop their own parodies of authority figures. The lesson initially focuses on the use of descriptive techniques to create a character and invites students to exercise their analytical skills by deconstructing examples of parodies.

Students then continue to create their own piece of writing to entertain by developing a parodied character. Students proceed to draft their character's entrance to a piece of creative writing and their interaction with another character.

Average ability students will:

• Know that there are various different methods of writing to entertain and understand that parody is one which is particularly popular in British culture.
• Know that parody can often be used in times of crisis or extreme stress to alleviate personal tensions.
• Know and practise the use of several descriptive writing techniques.
• Understand why it is important to draft a piece of writing with care.
• Recognise the importance of contributions of members of the WRNS during the First and Second World War.

Higher ability students will:

• Understand that there are many different methods of writing to entertain and that parody is one which is particularly popular in British culture.
• Understand how parody can often be used in times of crisis or extreme stress to alleviate personal tensions.
• Understand and practise the use of several descriptive writing techniques.
• Understand the importance of drafting a piece of writing with care and know the best methods to use.
• Understand the importance of contributions of members of the WRNS during the First and Second World War.
